Coming Up...
June 9th
I'll be a panelist at the Baltimore City Medical Society Foundation's Community Forum "Living with Diabetes in a Fast Paced World" at 6:00 p.m. in the Maryland State Medical Society Building, at 1211 Cathedral Street in Baltimore. This is such an important concern within our community and I am honored to be invited to offer my perspectives on creating a healthier local food culture here in our region. To request a copy of the flyer announcing the forum call 410-625-0022, email info@bcmsdocs.org, or fax 410-385-0154.

June 17th
I'll be in the Big Apple with The Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association for Baltimore Culinary Week at Macy's Herald Square, 151 West 34th Street. It's a part of Macy's Summer Cookin' series going on in their gorgeous Cellar Kitchen throughout the month of June.

I'm planning to stir up some Maryland Style Crab Soup and introduce a new version of my old favorite "Johnny's Sauteed Soft Shells" for the guests that afternoon. I hope all my friends in NYC can stop down and say "Hellos!"

July 5th - Jazz in the Sculpture Garden Series begins
Jazz in the Sculpture Garden features critically acclaimed musicians performing outdoors in the Baltimore Museum of Art's scenic sculpture gardens. These are really fantastic evenings... You can enjoy an elegant three-course meal served alfresco during the jazz concert on the outdoor terrace of my own Gertrude's restaurant. Visit Gertrude's site for the concert schedule and ticket prices.

July 12
Yes, It's Taste of Cambridge time again!
I'll be a judge as local restaurants compete for top honors for their crab soup, crab cakes, crab dip, and other crab delicacies in the Third Annual Taste of Cambridge Crab Cook-Off! This event, held in downtown Cambridge, an historic and charming Delmarva town, is always one of my summer highlights!

July 15
The Friends of the Wyman Park Dell (I'm one of em!) are holding the Mondo Shakeseare Fest in the beautiful hollows of the Dell. Check back for more details and information - should be quite the event!

July 26th
I'll be in St. Michaels, on Maryland's eastern shore, to take part in the Maritime Museum's Chesapeake Folk Festival.
Come on down and enjoy first-hand Chesapeake foodways, traditions, demonstrations, music, and crafts. Get your fill of foods from around the Bay; take a ride on a skipjack; imbibe wines from Maryland vineyards... Sounds like fun doesn't it! Hope to see you there!

September 16th - 21st
Gertrude's meets the Slow Food Baltimore Eat In Season Challenge. This week my Chef Brian Greene will be highlighting a three-course all local, all in-season menu as part of Slow Food's year-long restaurant challenge. Inspired by the growing “Locavore” trend Slow Food aims to enhance awareness of the benefits and joys of eating local foods as they come into season here in our region. Eating local, sustainably grown and produced foods decreases the harmful “carbon footprint” of our food purchases, enriches the local economy and helps to preserve the Chesapeake’s traditional foods culture. Not only that – it’s healthy and tastes great too!
Stop in that week and let us prove it to you!

17th Annual Chocolate Affair
Yes, it's over... but I can't help doing a little crowing about it because - GERTRUDE'S WON FIRST PRIZE!

Judges declared John Shield's Mojo Spice Bars the "Best Chocolate Treat" among the more than 50 fabulous entries. Congratulations to our Pastry Chef Douglas Wetzel!
