#108 Oysters, Oysters, Oysters
City:
Chincoteague Island, Virginia
Locations:
The town of Chincoteague, a wildlife refuge on Assateague Island,
and an oyster dock.
Guest Chef:
Alma Madanick
Recipes:
Single-Fried Oysters
Barbecued Oysters
Chesapeake Oyster Stew
Summary:
Oysters are still harvested in and around the Chesapeake Bay, and
Chincoteague is no exception. A thriving tourist destination, it
also features a national wildlife refuge.
Producer's Notes:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The crew stayed
in luxurious accomodations at the Island Motor Inn, but at the end
of a grueling 7-day work week. Alma introduced us to Frank, the
oyster guy, that day and he was great on camera; but we had planned
to also cover an oyster restoration project that day, and our contact
cancelled at the last moment due to an emergency. Alma has a beautiful
kitchen to cook in, but, as it turned out, not so practical to tape
a show in. And the oyster stew was delicious, but only after John
started over halfway through the taping when he "burnt"
the first batch of milk and ingredients. Simply the best of times:
Alma and her husband John threw a dinner party for the crew at the
end of the day, and it was fantastic!
